Department: HORT | Vegetable Breeding Summary of Job Duties: The Department of Horticulture at University of Arkansas seeks a Spinach Breeding Assistant to work in the laboratory of Dr. Ainong Shi to conduct spinach breeding. The job duties of the Spinach Breeding Assistant include spinach seed packaging, planting, harvesting, seed processing, breeding nursery maintenance and test plot management, data collection and analysis, and greenhouse and seed lab management. The incumbent will work spinach breeding in the field, greenhouse, and laboratory, particularly for purification for available spinach lines. The assistant will participate in the research on the USDA Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) to evaluate and develop disease resistance in spinach (https://spinachdb.org). In addition, the incumbent will participate in other activities in the program for plant breeding and genetics in multiple crops such as spinach, cowpea, common bean, tomato, and arugula. The incumbent will work based in Fayetteville, AR. Travel is required to work on the University Vegetable Center in Kibler, AR, and occasionally to Crystal City area, TX, Yuma, AZ, and Salinas, CA. Qualifications: Minimum qualification: a BS degree in Horticulture or a closely related field. Preferred qualifications: Experience in field breeding in crops is desirable. Excellent knowledge and experience in plant breeding and genetics are required. A BS or MS degree in plant breeding/ genetics or related field will be preferable and applicants with PhD degree are welcome to apply. Applicants should be highly motivated, able to perform independent research with minimal supervision in an interdisciplinary environment.
